Introduction

Multinational companies Coca Cola and Facebook- known for their global domination, capitalistic practices and unprecedented campaign budgets come together in 2012, the UN’s International Year of Co-operatives to celebrate a different way of doing business, one focused on “human need not human greed,”.
This landmark project will set an example to the world and big businesses that consumer brands can tackle the world’s most devastating, human injustices.
They have chosen one of the most complex, political and emotional conflicts- The Palestinian/ Israeli conflict – to put their powerful names behind a new regional head quarters and join forces to bridge one of the most long-standing fragmented relationships in history.

The Bridge

The Crater & Proposed Site

The environment was modeled on an actual bombed out crater that was left by an Israeli air strike in Palestine.

The Elevator & Lift Shaft

Two glass lift shafts pierce through the building providing access to all floors and the meeting place in the base of the crater.

Multi-media Meeting Table

The multi-media meeting table incorporates multi-touch technology and is connected to secure high speed broadband via satellite. When senior management from each company want to get out of the board room, they can meet for lunch and discuss regional strategy in an informational and pleasant setting by the water.

Massive Sun Controlled Windows

Sun controlled windows at each end of the office spaces provide light and spectacular views.

The Bridge & Communal Areas

On top of the bridge canvas awnings shade strip seating which provides a place for employees from both groups, as well as neighboring Israelis and Palestinians from the local area to socialise. The strip seating takes its design reference from wind patterns found in the sand.

The project brings together the immediate power of information and communications technologies via Facebook, Coca‑Cola & Take-Two Interactive Software.

To celebrate in a unanimous adoption by UN member states of the first ever annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence on 21 September - Peace Day. Facebook, Coca‑Cola & Take-Two Interactive Software are collaborating via communications technologies to change the way young people interact and learn about the world, signaling a new potential for peace-building.

Take-Two Interactive Software is producing a game which it hopes to increase mutual respect, trust and understanding among youth 14 to 25 years. Peace-building on Facebook with cross-border friendship pairing in Israel and Palestine. The initiative is supported by Facebook who publish daily friending rates across the region. Coca‑Cola will be raising awareness of Peace One Day via the iconic Piccadilly Circus and Cromwell Road signs in London and donating to the initiative.

According to Jeremy Gilley: ‘Our goal is to take the message of Peace Day to the world's people. To have the support of via Facebook, Coca‑Cola & Take-Two Interactive Software to help us achieve that is incredible. The role of the 3 corporations is crucial in helping us to unite the people of the world on 21 September.

The Earth Monument

The Earth Monument was conceived as an acknowledgement for two architects that have an astonishing and insightful connection to earth. One dead and one alive, they demonstrate the essence of the world through their work.

From beauty in nature to social issues and sustainability;
Jorn Utzon spent a lifetime perusing repetition in design, often turning to nature to find patterns for inspiration to create his organic, ‘additive’ architecture.

Bjarke Ingels founder of B.I.G., recognizes the impact of Architecture on the earth and the innovative solutions required to ensure a future through his playful philosophy, he calls ‘Hedonistic Sustainability’.
At the heart of the Earth Monument, is the image of earth. It's representative of both architects and embodies their inspiration, passion and philosophy.

The earth symbol
represents Ingels' macro view for the sustainability of the world and it is intended to be seen from above. The image is a mosaic and made up of 36 individual repeated textures(see below). The textures reference patterns in nature, which fascinated Utzon and symbolise a micro view of the world. The textures are intended to be seen close up on the ground.

The combination
of the two Architects' influences in the design for
the Earth Monument can be described as an electroliquid aggregation.

Textures - Patterns of nature

36 Custom textures arranged diagonally from light to dark. (Textures used to create the mosaic image of earth).

The Earth Monument

The Earth Monument is reached by a solar-powered airship with zero emissions. Passengers embark from a loading and observation platform 5km inland, (designed by B.I.G.).

The Earth Monument

When the airship approaches the Earth Monument, an image of the earth can be seen from above. The earth is made of mosaic tiles from 36 repeated original hand drawn sketches.(The central mosaic is a landing pad for the solar-powered airship. It is the arrival place for the Earth Monument and this is where passengers disembark).

The Earth Monument

From the side the concrete structural piers are relieved. (A repetitive element referencing Utzon's 'additive' thinking).

Combined Scheme - View point - Ground

The scheme is a pure blend of both architects by infusing one distinctive attribute of each. With Utzon the scheme monumentalises his philosophy of ‘additive’ architecture. This is realised through the exposed concrete piers, the repeated  unit is placed around a semi-circle and acts as the supporting structure.

For BIG, the monument articulates, Ingel’s’ fascination in creating land mass and providing a social space for physical human interaction. The topping, which is supported by Utzons piers, is a meticulously manicured grassed man man hill, to pic nic on and admire the majestic view. The platform is shaped in a donut, with one of its edges lifted high into the sky.(A technique emphasized in the W57 building, New York).

Each architectural element relies on the other to complete the monument. And together it creates something totally original.

Combined Concept - 'Land mass' and 'Additive Architecture'

The sketch illustrates a combination of references; BIG's man made landmass(terracing) and Utzon's exposed structure, which is a repeatable, 'additive' architectural devise.

Additive Unit - 5 plane combinations

Investigation into Utzon's 'additive' philosophy. Experimenting with different combinations of 5 planes.

Additive Unit - Study 2

Investigation into an Utzon's 'additive' philosophy to find a repeatable unit to form a structural pier.

Additive Unit - Study 1

Picking up on Utzon's additive architectural philosophy I've investigated a repeatable unit that can from a structural pier.

Utzon - 'Void' structure

Positive and negative spaces framing a central void.

Utzon - Concept Three - Exposed structure

The structure is exposed. Alternate levels are cantilevered off central supporting column.

Utzon - Concept Two - Additive

The individual planes interlock to form a 'unit' that can be replicated and added to create a structure that can grow.

Utzon - Concept One - Void

Interconnecting planes create positive and negative spaces, framing a central void.

BIG - 'Multi purpose' structure

Multi purpose structure in situ. The over lapping planar forms maximise the view from all angles and the roof is a putting range.

BIG - Concept Three - Mountain

The concept references BIG's philosophy of creating buildings as land mass. The terracing is reminiscent of the MTN project and the truncated sides, picks up on the Copenhagen waste management project.

BIG - Concept Two - Multi purpose

The structure is amalgamation of stacked, extended plains. The intention is to maximize the surrounding view and have multiple purposes (e.g the roof is also a putting range).

BIG - Concept One - Subtraction & Addition

Quite literately - Subtraction and Addition (picking up on BIG's playful side and referencing subtraction and addition through evolution. Bjarke Ingels referrers to Darwin and his theory of natural selection as an accurate explanation of the Architects creative process).
