The Earth Monument

 The Earth Monument was conceived as an acknowledgement for two architects that have an astonishing and insightful connection to earth. One dead and one alive, they demonstrate the essence of the world through their work.

From beauty in nature to social issues and sustainability;
Jorn Utzon spent a lifetime perusing repetition in design, often turning to nature to find patterns for inspiration to create his organic, ‘additive’ architecture.

Bjarke Ingels founder of B.I.G., recognizes the impact of Architecture on the earth and the innovative solutions required to ensure a future through his playful philosophy, he calls ‘Hedonistic Sustainability’.
At the heart of the Earth Monument, is the image of earth. It's representative of both architects and embodies their inspiration, passion and philosophy.

The earth symbol
represents Ingels' macro view for the sustainability of the world and it is intended to be seen from above. The image is a mosaic and made up of 36 individual repeated textures(see below). The textures reference patterns in nature, which fascinated Utzon and symbolise a micro view of the world. The textures are intended to be seen close up on the ground.

The combination
of the two Architects' influences in the design for
the Earth Monument can be described as an electroliquid aggregation.

Textures - Patterns of nature

36 Custom textures arranged diagonally from light to dark. (Textures used to create the mosaic image of earth).

The Earth Monument

The Earth Monument is reached by a solar-powered airship with zero emissions. Passengers embark from a loading and observation platform 5km inland, (designed by B.I.G.).

The Earth Monument

When the airship approaches the Earth Monument, an image of the earth can be seen from above. The earth is made of mosaic tiles from 36 repeated original hand drawn sketches.(The central mosaic is a landing pad for the solar-powered airship. It is the arrival place for the Earth Monument and this is where passengers disembark).

From the side the concrete structural piers are relieved. (A repetitive element referencing Utzon's 'additive' thinking).
